Front row Norman and Bertha. This was obviously a fairly affluent family as there are photographs of other family members in Russia and Germany, there is also a photograph of an 1868 painting of a house ('Mon Port') in Lausanne which they perhaps rented or owned. Rosa may have entered the nursing profession as there is a 25 year old nurse by that name working at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge according to the 1881 census.

Location

This CDV photograph was taken in Lausanne, Switzerland. I am not sure what the attraction was at Lausanne, probably a beautiful lake. The portrait was obviously taken while the familt was on vacation. A vacation in Switzerland for the whole family confirms that the Hardvastles were a very affluent family. There are photographs of other family members in Russia and Germany, there is also a photograph of an 1868 painting of a house ('Mon Port') in Lausanne which they perhaps rented or owned.

Chronology

This Lausanne portrait was taken in 1866.

Clothing

This 1866 portrait is a wonderfull illustration of contemprary children's clothing.

Boys' clothing

The boys have age appropriate clothing. Wilfred, the older boy, has a long pants suit with an adulr-looking collar. Note how all the boys have jackets that only button at the top. Both Norman and Basil have similar suits worn with detachable Eton collars. They seen rather moderate sized Eton collars. Norman wears knickerboker pants with simarly colored stockinfs. Notice the ekaborate detailing on his pants. This was quite common for younger boys in the 1850s and 60s.

Girl's clothing

The girls' dresses are quite dfferent. Rosa the youngest has a shorter hem than her older sister as well as a collarless dress with an open neck line. Her dress also has baloon sleeves ending at the elbow. Bertha has a small white collar that buttons and long sleeves. Both girls have dresses with button fronts and no collar bows.

Hair Styles

All of the boys have full hair cuts. Their hair is cut short, but allowed to grow around the ears. Each boy has a left part. Both girls have long hair, especially the oldest girl Bertha. I am not sure why Rosa has short hair. Was it because she was younger or did she prefer a shorter cut. Notice that she has a center part.
