English Boys' Clothes: Family Trends--The 1950s

Figure 1.--We note what appears to be a postcard image. The card here is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1950s. It is clearly a staged photograph, but the family probably posed in their actual clothing.

We note what appears to be a postcard image. Postcards used to be used rather like greeting cards or note paper. By the 1950s they had become more of a vacation greting, but earlier they were more ewidely used. One popular type of postcard were ones with children. This had becom less common by the 1950s, but had not yet disappeard. The card here is undated, but we would guess was taken in the 1950s. It is clearly a staged photograph, but the family probably posed in their actual clothing. Notice that the father wears a suit even while lounging at home. The girl wears a blue dress with smocking and baloon sleeves. There would have been a back bow, but is not vissible on the card. The boy wears short pants and the standard grey knee socks with dress leather shoes.
