English Boy Dresses: Unidentified Chester Family (1880s)
Figure 1.-- This Chester cabinet card is undated, but looks like the 1880s to us, perhaps the early-80s. The late-70s is possiblke, but we think the 80s is moew common. The two older children look like boys although admitely at this age you can not be sure. And their hair styles are boyish. The doll is a little cionfusing, but many boys this age like to play with dolls. They all look very young, but biology tells us that there has to be at leat 9 months sparation and 1.5-2 years is more likely. Thus given that the baby has to be a year or so, the other children are likey 3-5 years old. We might be off by a few monts, but again biology tells us that we can not be very far off. .

Notice the smocking on the garments to older boys are wearing. The middle boy looks to be wearing a smocked smock and the older boy a smocked dreess. Both dresses have boyish pointed collars. All three children have white socks and strap shoes. This is a give away that the family was English even if the did not have the studio information present on most cabinet cards. American children this age, the baby excepted, commonly wore long stockings and high-top shoes. The studio is G. Atkinson.
