English Sailor Dresses: Gender

Figure 1.-- Here we see two English children wearing grfeat wide-brimmed hats and sailor dresses. The cabinet cars is undated, we would guess it was taken about 1890, but are not at all sure. We believe both children are girls, but there is no way to be sure. Rhe child on the right looks rather boyish. The studio was A & G Tylor in London (we thinknLudgate Hill), but there were branches all over Britain. They were photographrers to her Majesty the Queen by special royal warrant and thevPrunce and Orincess of Wales. .

Sailor dresses were of course not exclusively worn by boys. We also notice girls wearing sailor dresses. We have noted portraits of English boys wearing sailor dresses. Unfortunately given the ages of the younger children wearung sailor dresses, it is often virtually impossible to know who is who unless the names are indicated which is usually not the case. There are clues to pick up on, but in many cases there is no way to be sure. And without that it graetly complicates asessing gender trends.
