English Boys' Skirted Garments: Family Trends--Garments

Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified English family probably in the 1880s. They look to be about 1/2-6 years old. Their are four children, a boy wearing a sailor suit and three children wearing dress. Not including the baboy, two of the children may be boys. There were several other skirted garments thar boys could wear at the time. The studio was H. Wheeler (Van Dyck Studio) in Weymouth. Weymouth is a popular resort town in Dorset.

We see a wide range of skirted garments, including dresses, skirts, kilts, smocks, pinafores, tunics, and others. The prevalence of the various garmnts varied over time. We believes that dresses were most popular during the early-19th century, but this was before photography was developed or became widespread. Family photography was thus most common during the second hafl of the 19th century when photography was well established. Thus we see not only dresses, but the many other types of skirted garments. The skirted garments were much more varied. On the previous page we see a range of different garments, but it is a little difficult to tell just who they were. Here all the younger Weymouth children are wearing dresses, but again it is not clear who they are (figure 1).
