Unidentified English Boy: Unknown Skirted Garment (1870s)

English skirted suit
Figure 1.--This unidentified boy was from Stalybridge, a suburb of Manchester. He looks to be about 5-6 years old. The CDV portait is undated, but we would guess the 1870s. His outfit could easily be classified as dress ir a kilt/skirt suit. The boy's outfit seems to have quite a mix of themes and features. He has an Eton collar and snall bow which he wears with a sailor-styled top. We are not sure if this is a dress bodice or jscket. And it is not clear if the skirt is part of a dress are a separate skirt. In America it might be called a skirt, but in England it may have been called a skirt pleating is very limited and there are no other kilt features.

We see some outfits thart seem to be a blur of different skirted garments. We notice this in the 19th century before garements were all ready made outfits. When garments were one of a kind creations sewn in millenaries rather than readymade, there was bound to be a wide variety of creations. The creators may have mixed various styles. We are not sure just how to classify them. A good example is an unidentified boy in Stalybridge, a suburb of Manchester. He looks to be about 5-6 years old. And notice the pantalettes, they vare more assiociated with dresses than kilt suits. We have not seen that before. The photographer was W. Emmett at the Victoria Gallery in Staly Bridge.
