England: Cambridge Family Hair (1860s-70s)

Figure 1.--This portrait shows Bertie in 1866 at 2-3 years of age. I'm not sure what the straps or ribbons he in holding are all about. Berie wears a dress wth a low neckline and puff sleeves, just like the dress his older brother wore. Bertie's hair is done in ringlet. As far as ee can tell Alan never had his hair curled. Image coutesy of the MD collection.

We are a little confused about how the brothers had their hair styled. The oldest boy, Charley, wore ringlet curls at about age 7 in 1866. The two boys closes in age, Alan and Bertie, seem to have had their done differently. Alain appears to have worn the same short hair style beginning as a baby. Bertie has a similar hair style as an older boy, but as a little boy his hair was curled. We do not know know why their mother decided to do Bertie's head differently than his older brother. Images of Alan about 1 year old in dresses (1863) show short hair. Bertie as slightly older boy about 3 years old in dresses (1866) show elaborately styled ringlet curls. They are not long ringlets, but they are very elabirately done tight ringlets. Actually he look rather like Shirly Temple when she was quite young. Later the boys had very similar short hair cuts. We are not sure how Guy had his hair done as a younger boy.
