England: Haigh Family--Cator (1863)

Figure 1.--Cator Haigh photographed in 1863 by Warner Gothard & Co of Grimsby, presumably in the grounds of Grainsby Hall. As Cator was born in 1861, he would have been about 2 years old in this portrait.

Cator Haigh, th oldest of the Haigh boys, was photographed in 1863 by Warner Gothard & Co of Grimsby, presumably in the grounds of Grainsby Hall. As Cator was born in 1861, he would have been about 2 years old in this portrait. He wears a small bonnet, not unlike what a girl might wear. He has a very small ruffled collr, a font buttoning jacket, and a skirt. He may be wearing a dress rather than a skirt, but his jacket makes it impossible to tell. The jacket has a rather strange sleeve arrangement that I can not quite figure out. He also wears stockings and high-button shoes. This is the same identical outfit that his little brother Hedley wore for a matching porotrait. His hair seems rather short, but from other images w see that it was combed back. As an older boy his hair was worn more obviously long. As far as we can tell from th images, the boys did not have their hir cut until they wee brechd.
