England: Haigh Family--Gwendoline (1870)

Figure 1.-- Gwendoline Haigh was photographed in 1870 by Henry J. Godbold of St. Leonards on Sea. The name Gwendoline does not appear in the 1881 census list and I suspect that this is Hilda Haigh, I am puzzled why two of the girls only have one Christian name listed in the 1881 census. Note her toy at the bottom of the portrait.

Gwendoline Haigh was photographed in 1870 by Henry J. Godbold of St. Leonards on Sea. The name Gwendoline does not appear in the 1881 census list and I suspect that this is Hilda Haigh, who was born about 1869. I am puzzled why two of the girls only have one Christian name listed in the 1881 census--perhaps the father could not remember all the names or the information on the census return is indecipherable. It is a charming image of Gwendoline. She looks to be about 1 year old. The image is also notable because the dress she is wearing does not seem much different than the dresses that the boys wore before breaching. Another interesting aspect of this portrait is that Gwendolineand her sister, like her brothers are listed as "scholars" (meaning students) in the 1881 census. This shows that the conventin of educating girls was becoming increasingly established by the 1880s. We do not know, however, if the children were sent to school or educated by tutors.
