David's Clothing (about 1955)

Figure 1.-- Here David wears what looks like a jacket with sailor stripes at the sleeve cuff. He also wears shorts, ankle socks, and sandals. A London reader writes, "There is a small van with the registration SPH629 in the background. This is obviously English -- the letters PH refer to Surrey, for which the main registration office was in Guildford. The owner's trade name on the back is EFCO. By great good fortune, they haven't changed their logo in 55 years! To quote their website, 'EFCO Limited is a well-established furnace manufacturer, founded in 1928 and a member of the BMT NV Group of Companies, since 1998." Since EFCO are based in Weybridge {a London suburb], I think it's likely that David lived somewhere in that area. The van appears to be parked outside the same block of flats that appears in one of the other photos of David, so I'd guess that an EFCO employee lived there and was able to take his van home at evenings and weekends. It's not an area I know - it was the wrong side of London from where I used to live.

David wears different outfits in family snapshots. We see him wearing a kind of junior including sailor suit. These junior sailor suits were commonly done as button-on outfirs in the 1940s. David has elazticized shorts for his sailor suits. We also see a snapshot of David all done up with a bow tie and vest for his 6th birthday. We also see him wearing what looks like a jacket with sailor stripes at the sleeve cuff (figure 1). He wears different kinds of short pants. He usually wore sandals with ankle socks. Dressed up for his birthday he wears slip on shoes. A reader writes, "On his 6th birthday he is seen wearing a bowtie. This was not common in England then. However I did think bow ties looked cool and wore one for school. This would be about 1955. It lasted about a month! It is possible that the family were academics and father wore a bow tie and his son likewise or the type of tie worn when there was a special occasion. Some of David's clothes are similar to ones I wore. I remember wearing a similiar jackets with similar design on the elasticated cuffs and the summer footwear- sandals."
