We all had duffle coats whch doubled for school wear. Tghey were dark grey in color to coordinate with our school uniforms. The duffle coat was one of the few coats that boys wore which came with a hood. Of course it was worn in the Royal Navy and in cold weather conditions, the sailors used the hood. We boys, however, were generally reluctant to use the hood--even in cold weather. I'll tell you why. I'm sure other boys had similar experiences or were teased by other boys. You see girls did use the hoods. They even had hoods on gaberdine overcoats. I was in the local sweetshop one day wearing that coast with the hood up and there was an adult behind me who went to pay for something. The woman behind the counter said: "Hang on, I'll just serve this little girl first". Rather indignately I took my hood down and said: "I'm a BOY!" ... and NEVER put that hood up again even when it was really cold.
