Jonathan: Sunday Church in the 1970s

Figure 1.-We went to school every Sunday. That was much more common in England than is the case today. I believe that Church attendance was beginning to decline in the 1960s. I'm not sure just why. We and many other families still attended regularly. Here we are off to Church Sunday morning spriced up in our Sunday best. In our case this mean our school uniforms. This was during 1972.

Sunday Church

We went to Church every Sunday. This photograph was taken during 1972. We set off for church like this every week, sometimes three times a day! There was a morning and evening service and Sunday school in between. There was no problem dressing smartly, it was 100% normal. We were never allowed out to play on Sunday. Around 1970, the afternoon Sunday School was ended and instead they included a Sunday school in the morning service.

Church in England

Church attendance was much more common in England than is the case today. I believe that Church attendance was beginning to decline in the 1960s. I'm not sure just why. We and many other families still attended regularly.

Our Church

Church was no problem although the sermons could be very long for boys our age , anything up to 45 minutes! Mum expected us to sit still throughout and we did. It was a very sober and friendly Evangelical church so there were of course no confirmations or anything like that. Everyone is expected to make thier own decision when they're old enough and I did that when I was 14. I asked to be baptised when I was back in England aged 16, along with one of my brothers. Another brother had already asked to be baptised... but one of them never has!

Clothing

Here we are off to Church Sunday morning spriced up in our Sunday best. In our case this mean our school uniforms. We didn't have proper suits. The school uniform items were fairly standard, but yu can see our school ties. My two younger brothers and I all went to the same primary school. My older brother was in secondary school. Notice our black shoes. Actually, we all had sandals and I loved wearing them!! I'm not sure why Stephen's wearing his in the snapshot and we're wearing shoes, but we often wore sandals to church. I remember once on the way to Sunday school some kids we passed in the street making fun of the sandals (they were going 'Look, they're wearing Jew boots'!!) but I wasn't bothered at all.

Standards

Look how shiny my mum kept the windows! Not many people do that nowadays.

Church Membership

I carried on at the same church until into adulthood (apart from 4 years spent in Belgium from the age of 12 to 16 when we went to a church there) but when I was about 30 moved to a different church which I still attend two services each Sunday.
