We note mostly rounded corners on CDVs in the 1870s, but are not yet sure about the chronology. And this can be a little tricky at some of the sharp corners wear down over time. The CDV here is a good example (figure 1). We know that in America that the sharp corners of 1860s CDVs give way to rounded corners in the 1870s. This change seems to have occurred about 1870. As far as we can tell this change also occurred in Britain and about the same time. It may well be a change that began in Britain and then crossed the Atlantic. This we are not sure about, but the 1870s British CDVs we have found all have rounded corners. Here we have to be careful. Our American archive is substanial, giving some validity to these assessments. Our British archive is much smaller so any asessments based on them do not have he validity of a larger archive.
