French Romper Types: Two-piece Suits

Figure 1.--Here we see a French boy wearing a barboteuse romper suit. The collar here is a different than many we have seen. Peter Pan collars were more commonly used. He had his portrait taken about 1950. He looks to be about 5 years old.

Although one-piece suits were the most popular. We also notice two-piece suits done in various styles. A HBC reader has sent a family portrrait of a boy wearing a two-piece romper suit.

Styles

Although one-piece suits were the most popular. We also notice two-piece suits done in various styles. We do not have details on the various styles because they were not as common as the one-piece suits. We think that many were styled like the classic one-piece suit with Peter Pan collars and puff sleeves. There were, however, amny other styles.

A HBC reader has sent a family portrrait of a boy wearing a two-piece romper suit. The boy was born in 1949. The portrait her was taken about 1954. We are not sure how to describe the style. a rather curios collar that I have no seen used very often. Notice that normaly his little collar should be turned round. Our reader tells us, "I am not surprised at this about this original way to do. It was a idea more his mother. The puff pants had one botton on each side. There was no bow at the back. The pants probably has croch butonning, most romper suits did. This romper was worn alone on sunny days. If it was cool mother might add a wool jacket or a very short coat with , if necessery. Our reader writes, " don't remember when he was wore the particular suit seen here. I do recall that he oftn wore rompers as a little boy. He had several different romper suits in various styles. It is sure he wore romper quite long time. Here he is about 5 yeras old. I'm not sure to what age he wore rompers. I parfectly recall when he was a young boy. We played together on many occassions. I recall Summer 1955. He stayed a couple days in my parents' house in the Loiret. As I recall he wore rompers while he was with us. He would have been about 6 years old. I don't remember what style romper he wore. I don't think it was the one here. I do seem to recall that he looked very smart. I never heard him complain about them. He was not as academically enclined as I was, but we got along fine as boys."
