German/Prussian Reiss Family (1843)

German family Reiss 1843
Figure 1.-- We have few family portaits from the 1840s and 50s. A wonderdul example is an Adolf Henning portrait of the sons and daughters of the Berlin court jeweller Reiss (1843). We do not know his full name or ant other infornation about the family. We think that they have been a Jewish family. They certainly look assimilated. Mother wears a pink dress. The daughter wears a white dress. Notice the low neck lines. The daughter wears a ewhite dresses. Both dresses are much fuller than the Empire style in the arly-18th century. Thry also have a defined waistline. Also notice the braids circleing the ears. The boys wear black jackets with white collars. One is a plain pointed collar. The other is a ruffled collar. The one boy in front wears stripped pants

The one boy in front wears stripped pants. We do note that there was a wealthy Jewish jeweler in Berlin at the time named Reiss. And we note American jewelry concerns named Reiss apparently beginning after World War II in New York. The artist, Carl Adolf Henning (1809-1900), was a German painter active in Berlin during thre Biedermeier period. He was the son of a court Kapellmeister (choir master). He graduated from the Berlin Academy (1823). He traveled in Italy with fellow painter Heinrich Mücke to study the great master works (1833-35). He returned to Berlin to launch a successful career as a portraitist. We see both full sized and small portraits. He also painted of historical and mythological subjects. He was elected a member and professor at the Berlin Academy (1839) He married Marie Jordan (1816-99) (1836). His brother-in-law and friend was another painter Rudolf Jordan. He was a highly competent portatist. Some art critisize his porrtaits as overly sweet. Given his long life, we have only found a relatively few portraits.
