German Boys Clothes: Unidentified Hamburg Family (1870s)

Figure 1.-- Here we see three children from an unidentified Hamburg family. The portrait is undated, but we believe was taken in 1870s. One child in a fashionable suit is clearly a boy. I'm not sure how to describe his suit. The gender of the other child is less clear. Image courtesy of the BP collection.

Here we see three children from an unidentified Hamburg family. The portrait is undated, but we believe was taken in 1870s. One child in a fashionable suit is clearly a boy. I'm not sure how to describe his suit. The gender of the other child is less clear. The child wears a dress, but children that age both boys and girls, both wore dresses. The child looks rather like a boy with short hair. The earrings, however, suggest that the child is probably a girl. We know virtually nothing about earrings at this time. We do not find many children wearing them, even girls. We have not noted boys wearing them in the 19th century. There is no way to assess the gender of the infant, but he certainly has an impressive pair of ears.
