German Family: Berlin (1910-15)

Figure 1.-- We know nothing about this family, except they lived in Berlin where the portrait was taken. The portrait is undated, but we believe was probably taken about 1910-15. This boy looks to have quite a set of ears, at least the shaved hair really make them stand out.

We know nothing about this family, except they must have lived in Berlin. The photographer was A. Wertheim whose studio was on Leipzigerstrasse. We are not sure where that was, but we do notice an Atelier Wertheim in Berlin at a different address. We assume that the adults are the boy's parents, but the man looks old to have such a young son. One HBC reader, however, writes, "I think that the man could easily be in his 40s. He's not wrinkled, just bald." The portrait is undated, but we believe was probably taken about 1910-15. We are not sure if it was taken before or during World War I. The portrait was a small family, only one son unless another son was in the army. The boy has a close-cropped head and wears a standard sailor suit. The portrait suggests a less formal relationship than is often shown in German family portraits (figure 1). his boy looks to have quite a set of ears, at least the shaved hair really make them stand out. I'm not sure why the shaved haircuts were so popular.
