Here we see German sisters and a visiting cousin. I'm not sure if there were any brothers in the family. Nor do we know yet just where in Germany they lived. The family snapshot is interesting because it shows several important fashion trends. Two of the girls wear white hair bows. They all wear light-colored dresses. Their hosiery differs, but all have white hosiery. They all wear black strap shoes. We are unsure to what extent the clothing variations are age related. Some of the clothing here was also worn by boys, especilly the white hisery and strap shoes. We suspect that because these styles were so popular with girls, they became less popular with boys.
The girls do not all belong in one family. At least not Rosmarie. The older girls seem to be sisters and the little girl nammed Rosmarie probably a cousin.
We notice several interesting aspects to the clothes the girls are wearing.
Two of the girls wear white hair bows. We note that it is the older girls wearing the hair bows. We are not sure why this was. Was it just coincidence? Did the little girls not want them? Or did mother think hair bows were more appropriate for the older girls. A German reader tells us, "In other photographs I also saw small girls with big hairbows. I guess it is just coincidence." Perhaps the girls tied the bows themselves and the younger girls did not yet know how to do it. Also notice that the boes are on the girls' right and set rather far forward. This could vary.
They all wear white or light-colored summer dresses. The youngest wears a very simple frock. The others seem to be wearing fancier, but comprable dresses.
Their hosiery differs, but all have white hosiery. The little girl wears three-quarters length socks, the middle two kneesocks, and the oldest long stockings. Again I am not sure this was coincidence or the dfferent types of hosiery reflected age conventions. Notice how the socks are all cuffed.
They all wear black strap shoes. This was a very popular style of shoes in the 1920s. These shoes look to be dress shoes, although they were not very well polished. Similar shoes were made as casual or play shoes and in colors, although this is hard to determine as our available photographs are black and white. Boys wore them also, but not as commonly.
We are unsure to what extent the clothing variations are age related.
