No holiday is more important in Germany than Christmas. And no German family album would be complete without Christmas images. And of course in Inge's special album we see Inge in front of the family Christmas tree. She is posing with her dearl little friends--two dolls. Notice the huge Christmas tree. Many German Christmas scenes we have found show very small, often spindly trees. Not Inge's family. We think this reflects the fact that the family lived in a small town or village with forests nearby. It also probably reflectys the fact that the family lived in comfortable circumstances. A reader writes, "On the linked phptograph of the girl on the outing to buy the forest tree, we can observe her mittens tied to sleeves to ensure that she would lose them. This was especially commom with toddlers. Here in Canada the practice was just for little girls. Perhaps in Germany and in earlier years this was commom for school age girls as well. It was a good solution to keep them. Also, because houses were not really warm during winter, children wore heavy wool stockings around Christmas and in January. In France and Germany, there is snow occasionnaly but humidity is so high that it gives the feeling iy is colder than when snow is around. As a matter of fact, snow on roofs is a good insulating product."
