German Boys Clothes: About 1915--Affluent Family

Figure 1.--This German portrait is undated. We believe that it was taken during World War I, but it could have been taken a few years earlier. More likely is durng the War. The mother and child are clearly an affluent family. Surely the father is a ranking officer at the front.

This German portrait is undated. We believe that it was taken during World War I, but it could have been taken a few years earlier. More likely is durng the War. The mother and child are clearly an affluent family. Surely the father is a ranking officer at the front. The mother is fashinably dressed. Notice the plume, lace, and fur. The boy wears an army uniform or at least military styling. As he is wearing acheavy coat, we can not see what he is wearing underneath. On his belt he has a mock pistol holster and a sabre. Most intresting is his helmet. The helmet is clearly a German military helmet, but rather than a spike it has kind of pedestal on it. I have seen soldiers wearing helmets like this. I think they were cavalry of hussars. A German source uses the term, "Ulanen-uniform". Ulanen are cavalry soldier who's main weapon is a lance and thus are called lancers. Also note the button on his helmet, I 'm not sure what thst meant, nor do we know what the number two meant. The cabinent card indicates that the portrait was taken in Gr. Lichterfelde, O. Gr. Lichterfelde is Groß Lichterfelde, a Berlin suburb. I don't know what the O means, perhaps "Ost" (East).
