Chronology

The portrait was taken in 1931. The stamp postmark shows this.

Postcard

The German written script on the back of the postcard is difficult to read. It is addressed to Herrn Paul Cohn (or Holm). Cohn of course is a Jewish family name. The city is Dortmund. Street: Limburgerstr.29. We believe that the German text reads, "Wir alle senden Euch herzliche Grüsse u. Küsse, besonders Eure Eltern." In English this means, "We all send you heartfelt greetings and kisses, especially your parents." We are guessing that the boy actually wrote this, in part because part of the address is crossed out. It sounds a bit mushy for a boy, but perhaps mother was helping him write it. It was probably sent to a relative.

Friedrich Ebert

It was mailed with a Friedrich Ebert stamp. Friedrich Ebert was a major figure in the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the first president of the Weimar Republic who died in 1925. He is a controversial figure in German history. The SPD recognizes him as a founders of German democracy who acted to prevent the S[artocust (Communist) take over after World War I. The problem for Ebert is that he used the right-wing Freikorps who violently suppressed the Communist urprisings. The Freiorps used great violence against German workers who were the core SPD constiuency.
