German Boys' Clothes: Rompers Age Trends--4 Year Olds

Figure 1.--Here we see a group of German children having some sort of beach party. They look to be mostly girls wearing drindkls. We notice two boys, one wearing suppender shorts, the other a romper suit. Many of the romper suits we see in Germany or being worn as beachwear or other playwear. They are dancing around a costumed bear. The boys look to be about 4 years old, the girls a little older. The German dealer believes this snapshot was taken in the 1930s. We are less sure about that.

Rompers were not just for infants and toddlers. We also notice many 4-year old German boys wearing rompers. Until rompers became a style for basically infants or younger toddlers in the 1960s, we see boys mostly about 3-5 years old wearing rompers. Age 4 years was thus a common age for rompers based on our assessment of the photographic record. As with the other ages, most of the examples we have found are playwear or very often beachwear. We see very few dressy German rompers.
