German Boys' Clothes: Garments--Skirts/Kilts

Figure 1.--This unidentified little German boy was probably photographed in the 1860s. He wears a double breasted-style jacket with what looks to be some sailor styling with a decorated skirt and panatalettes. Note the sailboat that he is holding. Some younger German boys rather than wearing one-piece dresses wore skirts with blouses or jackets. In Britain and America these skirts were often made in a kilt fashion and commonly were plaid. This was less common in Germany. We have not noted images of German boys in Highland kilt outfits. We have noted images of boys in ordinary skirts. We have very little information on these skirts at this time in Germany. We are unsure if this fashion was more or less common than actual dresses. Very little chronological information is available. The German boy here looks to have been photographed on the 1860s or possibly the early 70s.
