German Family Photograph Album: Primary School Photographs

Figure 1.-- This photograph was taken in 1929. It looks to be a school class, but it was not taken at school. It was labeled "Am Harrasfelsen"--at the Harras rock. The boys are primary school age. A few boys wear sailor suits. Put the cursor on the image for an enlasrgement.

The school scenes do not seem to focus on any individuals. There are a few primary school photographs. These are group photographs thast do not focus on any individuals. There are group photos at the beginning of the album. These are not photographs at school, but rather on outings. Or perhaps these were the group experiences oganized for German school children. These photographs appear to date from 1928 and 1929. The boys wear a variety of outfits, including sailor suits. Curiously while there are commonly some boys in German schools during this period wearing sailor suits, one photograph shows almost all the boys wearing sailor suits, but with school caps rather than sailor caps. This photograph is undated. We are guessing that after age 10 the boys in this family transferred to a gymnasium or other academic selective secondary school.

Undated Group

Curiously while there are commonly some boys in German schools during this period wearing sailor suits, one photograph shows almost all the boys wearing sailor suits, but with school caps rather than sailor caps. The caps are of a unifirm style, and look a little different than the caps I have noted being worn by German school boys. This photograph is undated. It looks like it may have been taken in the mid-1920s. The teacher is not in this photograph. Notice one boy has fastened his belt over his sweater.

Undated Portrait

One of the photographs in the album shows a boy wearing short trousers but with the old-fashioned survival of the ornamental buttons at the hem that used to distinguish "knee pants." The image was imprecisely dated but was labeled "late 1920s". I think it must be around 1928-29. The boy wears a knitted shirt with long sleeves and collar that serves as both a sweater and a shirt at the same time. His short trousers are at least four inches above the knee, but sill have the decorative buttons. He wears the standard brown cotton long stockings that were so common in the 1920s and 1930s. They are obviously held up by supporters because they are so smooth and taut on his leg. Boys at the time dressed more formaly in secondary school so we assume he was an older boy in a primary school.

1928 Group

This photograph was dated 1928. It is clearcly a class group with the teacher. I think the teacher in this and the 1929 photograph are the same. The teacher here seems to be wearing a kind of lab coat. The photograph is labeled, "Im Hof der Humboldt Schule". The boys wear a variety of outfits. Most wear shiirts or sweaters with short pants. Some boys wear suspenders. A few boys wear sailor suits. We see both dark and light-colored suits. The boys have short hair, but not the cropped hair that was common earlier. Several noys have bangs. They look to be about 8 years old.

1929 Group

The group photograph here was taken in 1929 (figure 1). It looks to be a school class, but it was not taken at school. Perhaps their teacher took them for a walk in the country. Or was this the group experiences oganized for German school children. The boys looks to be about 9 years old. The album page was labeled "Am Harrasfelsen". That means "at the Harras rock". I am guessing that this was a prominant local landmark and that the teacher took the boys for a hike there. The boys are primary school age. A few boys wear sailor suits.
