Greek Regions--Macedonia

Figure 1.--A church in the early 20th century Ottoman Macedonia. It looks like a demonstration is taking place outside the church, perhaps resisting Ottoman rule. The boys in the foreground and street scene outside appear to be wearing flat caps, rudimentary suits, and outgrown long pants.

Macedonia is located in northern Greece. It borders the now independent country of Macedonia which was once a part of Yugoslvia. Some Greeks think that Macedonia should be part of Grece. Macedonia is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The Macedonians spoke Greek, but many of the Greek city states did not think that the Macedionians were true Greeks, that is until King Philip and his son Alexander conquered them. Again we know lottle about destinctive Macedonian clothing styles, but a museum display provides us a look at the inside of a Macedonian church in the early 20th century. The museum display is from the Museum of Macedonia Struggle, Thessaloniki. It is a representation of a church in the early 20th century Ottoman Macedonia. (Macedonia remained under Ottoman rule long after Greece itself achieved independence in the 1920s. The diplay shows an Orthodox priest and two boys. It looks like a demonstration is taking place outside the church, perhaps resisting Ottoman rule. The boys in the foreground and street scene outside appear to be wearing flat caps, rudimentary suits, and outgrown long pants.
