The last portrait we have of the boys was taken in 1915. The portait is only of Villy and Fredy. Villy wears a very mature looking suit, he is now about 16 years old. Notice that the tie is the same polka-dot pattern that the boys wore as floppy bows. Fredy who is now about 9 years old wears a crisp white sailor suit with traditional styling. Presumably the collar detailing is in blue. Note Fredy's scarfe, German and Austrian sailor outfits often have scarves tied in that manner. Fredy has close cropped hair as the boys generally did when they were younger. We know nothing about their brothers. World War I was 1 year old when this portrait was taken in 1915. Pisti is likely at the front. Viki is probably posted to an Imperial Navy vessel.
World War I began in 1914. Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia to punish regime for supporting terroism after a Serbian terrorist assassinated Austraian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Russia began mobilizing to aid Serbia and in a premtive strike, Germany attacked France through Belgium in August 1914, hoping to knock out France before the Russians could mobilize. Britain came to the aid of France when the Germans attacked neutral Belgium. The Austrain Army and Navy were not nearly as effictive as their German counterparts. Like all of the major European combatants, Austria-Hungary suffered very severe casualties. The Austrian monarchy collapsed in 1918 as a result of the War and the Empire partioned. Both Austria and Hungary became independent countries.
