Italian Boys' Clothes: Chronology--The 1870s

Figure 1.--This difused oval CDV portrai shows a Palermo (Sicily) family, we believe in the 1870s. The portly fatherv is fashionably dressed. Mother seems more plainly dressed. They have two boys. The younger boy wears a tunic suit wih long pants. He seem to have a large collar, but it is a bit difficult to make out. His older brother wears a vested cut-away jacket with a small collar and cross tie. Huis long oants do not match his jacket. Thst as becoming less common by the 70s. The studio in Palermo was M. Graffeo.

We have developed some information on Italian boys wear in the 1870s. We do not know much about skirted garments yet, but we note boys continuing to wear tunics. The younger boy here is a good example (figure 1). Collars and bows were small until the 1870s. Collars were mixed during the decade. We cintinue to see many small collars, but we begin to see some larger collars. We see small neckwear like cross-bows. We see sailor suits, although some like the one the boy on the previous page is wearing do not look much like sailor suits. Notice the heavy use of stripes. We note boys wearing fancier suits in the 1870s with elaborate piping and embroidered designs. Younger boys might wear cut-away jackets (figure 1). The one the older boy is earig is cut longer than miost cut-aay jckets. The boy on the previous page appears to have an influence of sailor styling, especially at the collar. Military enspired designs appear popular. Stripe detailing was popular. We see noyh knicker-length pants nd long pants. Knee pants seem more commomn than knickers. We continue to see many boys wearing long pants. Shoes and stockings seem fancier than in Britain and America, but because of poverty many working-class boys went barefoot. The warm climate was a factor here.
