Soardi Family (Iseo Lake, 1920)

Figure 1.--Here we see an Italian fishermen family from northern Italy in 1920.

Here is a photograoh of the Soardi family, a fisherman family on Iseo Lake in North Italy, near Trento. The picture was taken in 1920. They wear their daily clothing and the three younger children are barefoot. The Iseo Lake is in Alpi Mountains (where winter is colder than the rest of Italy to the south). We wonder if hildren owned better clothing then that we can see here as well as footwear, but they don't wear in this photo. Thet surely must have had shoes to wear during the winter. This is uncommon because usually children are dressed up in their best clothing for family portrait. But notice that the parents are also not very well dressed. Before World war II, it was nevertheless common to see poor children often going barefoot in warm weather. This was especially common in images we see of ishermen's children. A factor here is that this was not a very well estabished studio. Notice the patched backdrop. Actually if you look at the ground you ger the impression that this was an outdoor setup. Perhaps this was not a planned visut which might explain why they were dressed so poorly.
