Japanese Boys' Clothes: Activities--Games

.

Figure 1.-- Here we see Japanese children playing what looks like hop-scotch-type in 1890. The field is drawn differently than the one I remember American girls using. We wonder what they are playing. Is that a school in the background. The photograph was taken in 1890.

We have very little information on the gmes played by Japanese children. We see them playing many of the same games played by Western children. Here we see Japanese children playing what looks like a hop-scotch like game in 1890. The field is drawn differently than the one I remember American girls using. Presumnanly this is a traditional Japanese gane. There was still limited contact with the West in 1890. We also note Japanese boys playing Kitaro/Kotoro about 1880, but have absolutely bo idea about what they are doing. Oftem photographs offer some hints as to what the game involves. Here we just have no idea. We note that Kitaro is the name of many modern Japanese computer games. It is not clear to us, however, just what kind of computer ganes is involved either. We assume that there were a whole range of traditional Japanese games, but we know nothing about them at this time. Hopefully our Japanese readers will provide more information.

Kitari/Kotoro

We also note Japanese boys playing what is identified as Kitaro or Kotoro on the nack of the ogitograph. The photograph would probably have been taken in the 1880s. Infortunately we have absolutely bo idea about what the boys are doing or what kind of game this was. Often photographs offer some hints as to what the game involves. Here we just have no idea. We note that Kitaro is the name of many modern Japanese computer games. It is not clear to us, however, just what kind of computer ganes is involved either. We will need some input from our Japanese reasers to sort this out.

Baseball

We note baseball bcoming a popular sport in the inter-War era adter World War I, an American import. We note Little League, school, and professionl play.

Other Games

We assume that there were a whole range of traditional Japanese games, but we know nothing about them at this time. Hopefully our Japanese readers will provide more information. We have very little information on the gmes played by Japanese children. We see them playing many of the same games played by Western children.
