Dutch Boys' Clothes: Poplin Jackets

Figure 1.--This jacket appeared in a 1960 catalog. It looks to be a poplin jacket, although we do not have the ad copy. Note that the jacket matches the short pants, giving it a suit-like look. Clickmon the image to see the rather destinctive shirt the boy was wearing.

Poplin jackets were popuar light jackets because they were so easy to care for. Poplin was a corded fabric. It could be made out of different materials. Cotton was often used for boys wear, but in the 1960s blended fabric with part polyester appeared making the jackets even easier to care for. They were available in many different colors, including bright colors. Khaki was popular in America, but I'm not sure about the Netherlands. One magazine showed a blue jacket with matching short pants. This was easy to do as the same material for jackets might be used for pants. It was not common, however, to match these poplin jackets with the pants in America.
