HBC has only limited information on the smocks worn by Dutch boys during the 1950s. We have noted younger Dutch boys wearing simple pinafore or garden type smocks during the 1950s. They also wore smocks with matching romper suits. These appear to be mostly smocks for home wear rather than school smocks as worn in Belgiym and France. In general they appear to have been worn by pre-school children.

The smocks had anumber of cariations. Often they buttoned at the shoulderm but did not have sleeves. Some were open at the side, There nay be edging in contasting colors. Often there was a large front pocket.
They also wore smocks with matching romper suits. Many Dutch rompers were made with an accompanying smock. The outfit could be worn with or without the smock. The smoc could be used as a protective garment or to provide a little extra warmth on a chilly day or
morning. Nornmally the smock and romper were made in matching colors. Most of these matching sets appaer to have been the bubfont of romper suits. A popular style was to add Russdian blouse type embroidery to the smock. Some times tassles were also added. The smocks could be worn by older boys withbshort pants. Ther smocks could also be used to
coordinate the outfits of older anf younger brothers. We are notvsure with this fashion bega, but we have notedit in the 1950s.
