The time line for neck ties and bow ties varies. HBC is not sure about the
time line, but neck ties seem to have appeared in the 1920s as the Eton collar
declined in importance for formal dress. Neck tieswere commonly worn by
Dutch boys by the 1930s. HBC is not positive when Dutch first began
wearing bowties. One Dutch contributor remembers wearing what he calls a
"butter-fly" bow tie as a boy. He writes "The butterfly-bow was very popular
in the 1960s. I was born in 1957 and wore one myself in the 1960s." Few Dutch boys now wear bow ties.
