Dutch Boys' Hair Styles: Shaved Head

Figure 1.--This Dutch boy in a portrait taken about 1885 has a shaved head--perhaps a school fashion. His older brother has longer hair. Click on the omage for a family view.

A number of Dutch boys in late 19th century photographs appear to have short cropped hair, almost shaved. This would appear to be a German style as it was popular in Germany through the early 20th century and did not decline until after World War I (1914-18) in the 192os. The same pattern probably occurred in the Netherlands. HBC is not sdure if schools might have incouraged this style.
