Bulgarian Boys' Garments: Suits

Figure 1.--The two primary stuit garments are the tops and bottoms. The top is usully a jacket, but we also see blouse tops in the 19th century. This is a good example. The boy wears a blouse suit. Notice the decoration repeated on the scarf, something we have not noted before. It looks to be a mixtur of embroidery and buttons. The photrapher was Armenian, Markrian in Choumla, a city in northeastern Bulgaria.

There are two primary suit garments, the tops and bottoms. We do not know of any specifuc Bulgarian styles, but ome of the dcoration my be chraracteristically Bulgarian. The top is usully a jacket, but we also see blouse tops in the 19th and early-20th century. Although the blouse was a shirt-like garmnt, the material for these suits looks to be the same as the pants. The boy here in the early-20th century is a good exmple (figure 1). Blouse suits were a little less fiormal than jacket suits and genrally worn by younger boys. There were various style jackets, the same worn in other countries. We see various styles of jackets as well as the short pants, knickers, and long pants we see in other countries. The boy on the previous page wears a standard single-breasted jacket, in this case notice the large lapels. We do not have a large Bulgarin archive so do not yet have a lot of information on the various jacket styles. Other garments associated with suitss are matching headwear and vests. We have not yet found matching headwear, but we do notice vests. The bottoms are pants and we notice all of the major types: short pants, knee pants, knickers and long pants. The prevalence of each varied over time. The short pants suit on the previous page.
