Beslan School No. 1: Memorium

Figure 1.--A HBC reader has sent us her tribute to the children of Beslan, both those who were killed and those who survived.

We began to prepare a page on the Beslan tragedy and realized there needed to be a separate memorial page to expressed our condolences to the people of Beslan, to the children, the parents, and the teachers. There is a need to discuss what happened and why, but there is also a need to grieve. We can't help but think of the first day at Russian schools, all the beautiful children so full of hope. The girls in their starched pinafores. The boys in new suits. All so full of hope and the future. Then suddenly the carnage. The horrific images of small mangled bodies. Our heart bleeds for these children and their parents. I can recall little in my life where such innosence was attacked with such evil. Our sympathy goes out to the bloodied people of Beslan. We are hard put to adequately express our sorrow. HBC readers are invited to leave their condolensces here as a small children to the innocent, violated children of Beslan.

This apauling act of terror belies belief. Only the haunting images of the children can convince us of what occurred. Our prayers go out to the brutalized people of Beslan. All those beautiful children. Image after image of children being carried from the carnage. They were all to reminisent of the New York City fireman cradeling the battered body of the little girl which became a symbol of the 9-11 attack. We know from history that there are evil people, although the barbarity of this attack is difficult to comprehend. What I do not understand is where is the outrage from Islamic leaders.

For everyone coming here as readers or writers, children are a central part of our concern with past and future. We can look at them in their lovely dresses of past their mothers knitted or sewed on. Alas !Alas! After NAZIism, those kids of Beslan would need some peace of mind but intolerance is always looking at new victims. Our childhood is a beginning for everybody of us. HBC is a CANTOS to the glory of children. What is so hard to take is to see those little broken bodies. It is normal at my age to see death in face but the worst thing that can happen is to see this new wave of life broken by Evil. To see such innocence trampeled by single-mindedned hatred is more than one can bare? I saw the Beslan children through the looking glass last morning running for water after such vileny, children crushed by adult cupidity, children waiting for loving care, children of Belsan sleeping now in the underworld of our memory, your blood is a hard rain in my heart and those who love you.

It’s difficult to put into words my feelings regarding this repulsive act of sheer slaughter of the innocents. How can one comprehend what goes on inside the mind of a terrorist and what did they hope to achieve by singling out a school full of children. They only alienated themselves and their cause! 9/11 was bad enough, but to sacrifice the innocence of childhood beggars belief. My prayers are with the families and also for the repose of the souls of those killed in this act of multiple murder. Being a committed Christian I’m supposed to practice forgiveness, but how can one forgive what has happened in Russia this past week. I hope God will forgive me for not showing any signs of forgiveness towards these murders.

It is difficult to express our emotions about what happened in Russia. I shall never understand what such fanatics are trying to achieve. They commit the most horrible crimes for what? Why? Don't they have children themselves or little brothers and sisters? How can they sleep at night? It really is sooo sad. The scenes I have seen in the news will haunt me for a very long time.

Very tragic to realise that while we had a very joyous First Bell Ceremony children elsewhere in the Russian Commonwealth were taken hostage during the ceremony. They were treated to terror that is beyond belief and for many being blown up when one of the bombs 'accidently' exploded.
