Croatian Boys' Clothes: Unidentified Family (about 1910)

Figure 1.--Here we see a Croatian family portait about 1910. The parents are at the center, surrounded by their eight children. All the children but one are boys. The younger boys are all wearing different styles of sailor suits.

Family images are very useful because they provide insights as to what kind of clothes and fashions the rest of the maily was wearing. Family images can also provide some useful life-style insights. We do not have many Croatian images at this time, but have begun to collect some for this section. At this time we only have an image of an unidentified Croatian family, probably taken about 1910. It looks to us like a working-class family.

Chronology

This portrait is undated. We suspect that it was taken in the 1910s, probably before World war I began in 1914. There was heavy fighting in the Balkans beginning with the Austrian invasion of Serbia. We suspect that portraits like this became less common after the War began in 1914, but we are sure portaits were made so it could hve been taken in the mid-1910s.

Family Details

It looks to us like a working-class family. It does not look to be a poor family. The family is all well dressed, but they are not elegantly attired as might be expected with a middle-classs or especially an upper-class family. Note in particular that the father does not wear a necktie. Another indicator is the fact that the boys began wearing long pants at a reltively young age.

Family Members

Here we see a Croatian family portait about 1910. The parents are at the center, surrounded by their eight children. The father wears a suit and white shirt, but without a neck-tie giving him a somewhat unkempt appearance. The mother looks much better dress, wearing a black dress. All the children but one are boys. The three younger boys are all wearing different styles of kneepants sailor suits. The suits are all rather plain suits, but different colors. Note the boy in the white sailor suit has some sort of badge. All the boys regardless of the color of the suits wear black long stockings. The four younger boys wear long pants sack suits, even the younger boy who looks to be only about 10 or 11 years old. They all have neckwear although the actual type of neckwear is unclear. The one girl wears a black dress with a lacey adornment.

Hair Style

All the younger boys have etremely short, cropped hair.
