Croatian Boys' Clothes: Germents--Dresses

Figure 1.--Pictured here are a boy and girl, almost certainly siblings (figure 1). The children are not idntified, but we believe the younger child is a boy. The children are wearing cut-away jackets and dresses. The girl is seated, the boy is standing. Although not unusual for little boys to wear dresses up to the early 1900's, this is rather unusual in that the boy is a little older. One can definitely see more masculine features on the child standing and the hair style is a boyish one.

We note younger Croatian boys wearing dresses in the 19th century. This was a commonn practice in Europe. We do not know how common it was Croatia or how it may have compared to other countries. We suspect that in the major cities the fashion was similar to that in other provincial cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We do not have a sufficient archive of images to make real assessment at this time. Here is a CDV from Crotaia. It is undated, but probably was taken in the eatly 1870s. (We have ot noted elaborate backgrounnds in 1860s CDVs, but our archive in mostly American. This may be different in Europe. Pictured here are a boy and girl, almost certainly siblings (figure 1). Mayer, although we do not know where in Croatia.
