On the previous page we see a barber shaving someone's head. A boy assistant holds what looks like a hand mirror. The barber here seems to have a musical accompaniest. We are not sure how common that was, but these barber shops seem to have been fairly common. Notice the bowls on the wall, with the indent to accomodate the customer's chin. We also see his razors on display. The scene looks rather staged. We are not entirely sure that these were actual shops are taken in the studio. We thought bsrber shops might be plaves for men to gather and attack affairs if the day, but based on the set uo we see in the availabke photogrphs, this does not seem to have been the case. Boy assistants seem common at these barber shops. Here we see another Cairo barber (figure 1). Note the covered bird cage. We see the customer holding a cin indented water soap bowl. Note the boy assistant. for some reason he is almost all covered up. Note he hold a norror and fan tob swish away fkys at thec ready. He might be the barber's son. This was an Émile Béchard photograpg.
