The photo was taken during a Mass in an Egyptian Coptic Church. In this rite, nearing the altar, nobody can be shod. The people take off their footwear for the Holy Communion, the priests and the altar servers must be shoeless all the time. We wondered if this convention was of ancient origins or a Muslim influence. A reader tells us, "They quote Exodus 3:4-5: When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then He said, "Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."
Another reader writes, "Is the celebrant who is elevating the chalice a bishop? It looks as though he were wearing a mitre. But in the western rite (at least in Anglican and Roman Catholic Masses) the celebrant never has his head covered during the actual consecration of the elements. Of course the custom may be different in the Coptic rite. I know a priest
who is a liturgical expert, however, who would probably know, and I'll try to find out."
Another reader tells us, "The celebrant is not a bishop. He is a priest. The head-wear is not a mitre, but a liturgical garment that Coptic priests wear for the Mass."
