Paraguay: Activities

Figure 1.--Here we see a group of Praguayan boys dressed for First Communion in Assuncion, Paraguay, during the 1950s. The boys all wear short trousers with jackets. We see a mixture of knee socks and long stockings, and one boy wears white ankle socks. The boys seem to be 8-9 years old, and don't seem all that thrilled to be so formally dressed. Paraguay was a poor country and given the fact that the boys are well dressed, we think they attended an exclusive private school.

Our information on boyhood activities in Paraguay is very limited. We have begun to collect some information. We do not yet know much about Paragayan schools. Paraguay is one of the poorer South american countries and economics of course affects children's activities. The religion is primarily Christian. Native American population was converted to Christianity during the colonial era. The country is ovewealmingly Catholic. Children traditionally do First Communion ceremonies. This is particularly the case among the well-to-do and middle-class children. We are less sure about the rural poor. There is also a small Protestant minority as a result of the work of missionaries in the 20th century. There is also an active Mennoite group in Paraguay. While we have developed very little information on the country, We do not yet have information on the games Paraguayan children played. We know little about sport in Paraguay. We assume the principal sport is futbol--soccer. we do have a page on Parguayan soccer. This of course is a testimony to the global reach of the sport. We have been unable to find information about Paraguayan youth groups.
