Figure 1.-- The early 1940s was not a happy time for Polish families. NAZI Grman invaded (September 1939) and occupied Poland until driven out by the Soviet Army (July-August 1944). Józef and Wiktoria Ulma lived in Markowa, southeastern Poland. Józef was born in 1900 and Wiktoria in 1912. They married in 1935, and eked out a living on a small farm they owned. It was an act of grerat courage and they paid a terrible price. Any one helping Jews faced summary execution. In 1944. before the Germans were driven out of Poland, the Ulmas were denounced by a member of the Blue Police--the German controlled police of ccupied Poland. The Ulmas were arrested and executed along with their six precious children: Stanislawa (born in 1936), Barbara (1937), Wladyslaw (1938), Franciszek (1940), Antoni (1941), and Maria (1942). Wiktoria was 8 months pregnant and it seems that she gave birth at the last minute. In 1995 Józef and Wiktoria Ulma were bestowed the title of Righteous Among the Nations. On September 10, 2023, in their hometown of Markowa the Catholic Church beatified the whole family, parents and children. Here we have a photo taken on the day of the baptism of one of the children.
