Polish Folk Costumes: Zakopane Area


Figure 1.--This 1929 press photo was captioned, "Peasant type in littl known Polish district". The caption read, "A typical shepherd in the Zakopane region of Poland -- a district which nestles in the heart of a branch of the Carpathian Mountains. The hat and a sleeveless jacket are characteristic of the peasant dress. The Zakapone district is becoming better know to American tourits since the War because of its rugged scenery and quaint ways of living of the inhabitants."

We note boys in rural areas wearing a range of regional folk costumes. We do not note any destinctive Polish garments, but tese folk styles have influenced detailing on Polish clothing. Our infrmation here is limited. We note peasant shepard teenager from the Zakopane area of Poland in the Carpathian Mountains. The hat and a sleeveless jacket are characteristic of the peasant dress. The boy wears leather pants that look somewhat like like Lederhosen. Note the design on the pants.
