Russian Boys' Clothes: Platt Family (1900s)

Figure 1.--The Platt family consisred of three brothers and a sister. We have a 1909 family portrait that we initially thought was British. The three boys all wear Eton collars, the younger boys wear suits with a touch of Norfolk styling. We believe that this family lived in Odessa or earlier lived in Odessa. We do not know if this was a Russian or foreign family. We believe that the older boy was Arthur. Click on the image to see Arthur in 1899.

The Platt family consisred of three brothers and a sister. We have a 1909 family portrait that we initially thought was British. The three boys all wear Eton collars, the younger boys wear suits with a touch of Norfolk styling. The older boy who we believe was named Arthur wears his Eton collar with a neck tie and a stabndard single-breasted suit jacket. The younger boys have bow ties. We could not tell where they were from. We do not have the children's first names, except for the oldest boy. His name apparently was Arthur, We have a second image of Arthur, however, that was taken in Odessa during 1899, 10 years earlier. Again if we did not know that the portrait was Russia, we would guess that Arthur was English. Arthur is of course an English name. We are less sure about Platt. We wonder if this was a foreign family living in Odessa. As all we have to go on at this time is the Odessa studio cabinet card identification we are archiving this in the Russian section. We are not, however, at all sure that this was a Russian family. Not only could this have been a foreign family in Odessa, bit the family could have emigrated. The 1899 portait if Arthur, however, looks as English as the 1909 portrait of the four children. Not only do the clothes look more Engkish than Russia, but also the hair cuts. Younger Russian boys in the early 1900s very commonly had closecropped hair cuts. Hopefully HBC readers will have some insights here. We know that some Platts emigrated to America. If this family emigrated we do not know. I am not sure where the 1909 portrait here was taken. It looks more English to us than American, primarily because the boys are wearing knickers rather than knee pants.
