Russian Boys' Garments: Sailor Suit Accessories

Figure 1.--Here we see two Russian brothers wearing white sailor blouses. They look to be about 6-8 years old. Notice ther different number of stripes on the sailor collars and the different designs on the dickys. we see nautical designs (anchors) and monarchy (crown). We are not sure what the bird-like design is. Bangs were a very common hair style for boys. The portrait is not dated, but given the dicky designs, it had to be before the Revolution, probably about 1910.

There were a range of accessories worn with sailor blouses, including dickeys, shoulder patches, lanyards, buttons, and other items. The most important is probably the dickey, also called a shield. Stripped dickies were very common. The dickey the boy on the previous page is wearing is a good example. Perhaps this was because the striped dickys were often the choice of the Royal Family. There were also plain white dickys as well as dickys with embroidered nautical devices or royal motifs showing the association with the royal family. Sgevrons were also used. We are not sure what the bird like device seen here represented (figure 1). These designs can help date the photographs. The desugn here was obviouly some of the ones popular before the Revolution. After the Revolution, the dicky designs were less common and of course there were no designs related to the monarchy like we see here. The dickys varied. Some were sewn on, others buttoned on. They could be removed for warm summer wear. The lanyard way more of a fancy optional item. The shoulder patch was fairly common.
