The Boy

This unidentified American boy was photographed in 1910. Tis may be more of an estimate, but we would estimate thas the portrait was taken in the 1910s. It looks like a studio portrait anf the artful pose and backgrond suggests to us a rather accomplished studio, Unfortunately there is no information other than the date available on this boy. The Eton collar and sporty suit suggest to us thatvhe came from an affluent family. We would guess tht he was about 8-9 years old.

Music Lessons

The boy is holding a violin. We suspect thst the portrait was taken just before or after a student recital. The violin was a populr choice for individual music instrucion. It is not clear if he is a beginner or a boy who has begun to become proficient.

Clothing

Notice the rather sporty checked suit and the Eton collar. He wears the Eton coillsr with a necktie. Some American boys wore Eton collars that were not as severe as some of the Eton collars we nore in England. This one appears to be a classic very severe Eton collar. It eaher contrasts with the rather sporty cjhecked suit. The suit gives us an excellent illustration of the way above-the-knee knickers fastened with a buckle and strap closure just above the knee. The long black stockings were of course standard with such suits. But the rather bold check in the texture of the suit seems to me a bit unusual for 1910 and also for a boy of his age. I looks to us like a summer suit. We might have thought that for a recital that he would wear a more conservative suit.
