Figure 1.--Here children are wading in the water on a breezy day at Detroit's Belle Isle Park in 1908. The MacArthur Bridge can be seen in the background. Notice the girls' hair bows.

Many American states and cities face a range of serious probles. Detroit was the first major city to actually gonankrupt in modern times. Detroit went first because of incredibly poor municipal management and the collapse of car sales in 2008. The city in its hey day built severl city parks. Surely the most charming is historic Belle Isle Park which the State of Michigan recently took off the city's hands. The 985-acre island park is situated on the Detroit River. The Isle and park have an interesting history. An autmobile fatality was the inspiration for Cadilac invening the self starter. The Park today offers a range of activiyies, including an aquarium, conservatory, nature zoo, and the James Scott Memorial Fountain. Now closed is a Nature Center where visitors were once able to traverse wooded trails and view interesting wildlife natural habitats. Other atractions include the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a Coast Guard station, a municipal golf course, and numerous monuments. Particularly popular is a half-mile (800 m) swimming beach. Belle Isle is the largest city-owned island park in the United States. It is the third largest island in the Detroit River marking the United States-Canadian border. The larger islands ate Grosse Ile and Fighting Island. It is connected to mainland Detroit by the MacArthur Bridge, but there is no connection with Canada.
