United States Boys' Activities: Party Outfits (The 1890s)

Figure 1.-- This is a stereo view story card, part of a set dated 1898. The caption here was "You may have just one." The children are pictured in their party clothes. The boy wears a fancy Fauntleroy blouse. The girl probably had a while dress, but color applied to add interest to the card. .

Men and women as well as the kids dressed formally in the 1890 even for occasuins that we now see as casual evernts. Parties were definitely a time to dress up. And this included the kids. The children here show off good examples of party outfits. A reader reminds us, "It is also possible that it is not a party clothes but an outfit for an outing such as going to the park or something else; in the 1890s people dressed more formally for public occasions." Kids at the time were always dressed up in their best clothes for parties. And in the 1890s that could be very fancy oufits like the omes we see here. Younger boys might wear kilt suits or Little Lord Faunteleroy suits. During the summer they might just wear the fancy Fauntleoy blouses without the suit jacket as we see here. These blouses had huge ruffled collars and were often worn with large floppy bows. We also see sailor suits. Older boys might not have Fauntleriy suits, but often were decked out with Fauntleroy trim like the large collars and floppy bows. Girls might wear fancy dresses with elaborate decorative elements such as ribbons and ruffles. White was an especially popular color for party dresses. We do not yet see huge hair bows, but we do see some smaller bows.
