Galveston Hurrican (1900)

Figure 1.-- These two 12-year-old boys are shown in the aftermath of the devastating Galveston, Texas, hurrican in 1900. The figures are rather small, to be sure, but we can see their clothing quite clearly. Notice that both boys wear the straw hats that were fashionable in 1900.

These two 12-year-old boys are shown in the aftermath of the devastating Galveston, Texas, hurrican in 1900. The figures are rather small, to be sure, but we can see their clothing quite clearly. Notice that both boys wear the straw hats that were fashionable in 1900. Because of the hot weather they do not wear jackets, only white shirtsor blouses. Both boys wear knee trousers, one with black long stockings, and the other going barefoot. The date of the storm was Sept. 8, 1900. The Galveston hurricane, which almost wiped out the city, was one of the deadliest natural disasters in American history--worse even than either the contemprary San Francisco earthquake or modern Katrina in New Orleans.
