American family 1850s
Figure 1.--Here we have an Ambrotype of an unidentified family. The glass plate has been reoved from the protective case. There is no accompanying information. Unlike Dags, Ambros are relatively easy to date. It would have been taken in the second half of the 1850s and very early-1860s. We see what looks like a well-established family. This is a beautifully composed family portrait. Notice the family interactions.

Notice the family interactions. There are three children and the fuzzy image of what looks like a baby in the foreground which is very unusual. The children look to be about 1-8 years old. The younger boy wears a plaid dress. His older brother wears a vested suit with a super abundance of buttons and a white collar. We don't see any neckwear. Notice the hair over his ears. Their sister wears a low-neckline plaid dress with a heavy necklace. Her hair is done with double hairbows. Father has a short beard and hair at his ears. He also wears a vested suit, but ith the standard stock and with a gold chain. Mother has the molded hair popular at at the time.
