United States Boys' Clothes: 1888 New Hampshire Family

Figure 1.--This portrait was taken in Concord, New Hampshire. It is undated, but a second portrait taken about the same time was taken in 1888. Image courtesy of te RG collection.

We note a New Hampshire family that had their portrait taken in 1888. The parents look rather old, they may well be grand parents. There are two boys who look to be about 5 and 8 years old. The older boy has short hair and wears what looks like a light-colored suit. His younger brother has quite an elaborate ringlet curls hairdo is has not yet been breached. He wears a kilt suit outfit. We note two portraits from different New Hampsite cities, so we arr not positive where they lived in New Hampshire.

Chronology

We note a New Hampshire family that had their portrait taken about 1888. While this portrait is not dated, a portrait of the younger boy dressed almost identically was datd 1888.

Location

We note two portraits from different New Hampsite cities, so we are not positive where they lived in New Hampshire. The portrait here was taken in Concord. The other prtrait was taken in Lebanon at about the same time.

Family

We do not know the name of this family. This may not be a nuclear family. The parents look rather old, they may well be grand parents. There are two boys who look to be about 5 and 8 years old.

Clothes

The older boy wears a rather plain looking light-colored suit. He has lmost no collar and also no bow. Bows were very common for boys this age, even boys wearing plain suits. His younger brother has not yet been breached. He wears what looks like a velvet kilt suit outfit. He has a large bow, but almost no collar. This was rather unusual in 1888 when large lace collars were all the vogue.

Hair Styles

Both boys have very carefully done hair. The older boy has short hair. The only similarity with his little brother's hair style is the part. His brother has quite an elaborate ringlet curls hairdo. Rnglets were not uncommon at the time for younger boys, but the kind of large top curl was much less common at the time.
